MANEUVERS
THE ORIGINAL SERIES DIDNâT HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY OR BUDGET THAT LATER SHOWS POSSESSED TO CREATE THE COMPUTER-GENERATED BATTLES EXPECTED TODAY, BUT THE PRODUCTION MANAGED TO AMP UP THE TENSION WITH STRATEGIC SCRIPTING (AND OF COURSE, SOME SHAKING SEATS). SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS STARSHIP BATTLES AND STRATEGIES INCLUDE:
Neutral Zone Engagement When a Romulan bird-of-prey with its cloaking device faced down the Enterprise near the Neutral Zone both captains engaged in a game of cat and mouseâpitting the speed and maneuverability of the Enterprise against the Romulansâ cloak and plasma torpedoes. Kirk critically damaged the bird-of-prey and rather than be taken captive, the Romulan captain destroyed his ship.
TOS âBALANCE OF TERRORâ
Battle of the Mutara Nebula When his archenemy Khan commandeered the U.S.S. Reliant and crippled the Enterprise, Kirk retreated into the Mutara Nebula, which effectively disabled both shipsâ shields and sensors. The captain took tactical advantage of Khanâs two-dimensional thinking. Sinking below the horizontal level in which the ships had been fighting, the Enterprise managed to deliver killing blows before Khan activated the Genesis torpedo, destroying Reliant and the nebula.
STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN
Battle of Wolf 359 The engagement with the Borg at Wolf 359 went down as one of the Federationâs worst defeats. A Borg cube carrying the assimilated Captain Picard, with his knowledge of Starfleet strengths and tactics, helped the Borg destroy almost all forty ships in the fleet assembled to battle the cube. Over eleven thousand lives were lost, including Benjamin Siskoâs wife, Jennifer.
TNG âTHE BEST OF BOTH WORLDSâ/DS9 âEMISSARYâ
The Corbomite Maneuver Kirk claimed all Starfleet ships contain âcorbomite,â a substance that creates a reactive, destructive force against any attacker as a bluff when dealing with a captain in the First Federation.
TOS âTHE CORBOMITE MANEUVERâ
Battle of Khitomer As the Enterprise-A traveled to Khitomer to prevent conspirators from stopping the scheduled peace conference, General Chang attacked in a cloaked Klingon vessel. Even with the aid of Captain Sulu and the U.S.S. Excelsior, Changâs ship continued to have the upper hand until Spock realized that cloaked ships still vent plasma exhaust. Uhura suggested using their equipment for cataloging gaseous anomalies to find the cloaked ship. A modified torpedo helped the Federation ships target and destroy Changâs vessel.
STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY
Operation: Return After Captain Sisko convinced Starfleet Command that the Bajoran Wormhole was the key to protecting the Alpha Quadrant, he led the fleet to retake Deep Space 9. Sisko baited Gul Dukatâs forces, trying to open a hole in their defenses, and Dukat countered by breaking off some fighters in a move that was a clear trap. Starfleet forces were close to defeat when the Klingon Defense Force arrived to render aid. Though the minefield that had prevented additional Dominion forces from coming through the wormhole was destroyed, Sisko convinced the wormhole aliens to make the incoming Dominion warships disappear.
DS9 âFAVOR THE BOLDâ
Battle of Maxia (The Picard Maneuver) When Picard was captain of the U.S.S. Stargazer, the ship was attacked and damaged by what was later found to be a Ferengi vessel.
